Pharmaceutical regulatory body calls for strict codeine prescription

The South African Pharmaceutical Regulatory Affairs Association has requested proposals from the industry on how to control codeine-containing products.

The regulator is considering to have the popular painkillers and cough syrup sold on a prescription-only basis.

Codeine is available at pharmacies over-the-counter without prescription but it is an opiate-based drug and so has similar properties to heroin.

Clement Manyathela speaks to Independent Community Pharmacy Association CEO Jackie Maymen.

We as the Independent Community Pharmacy Association feel that codeine does need to be controlled better because very often it is abused and people get addicted.

However, to up schedule the medicine will decrease accessibility although we know up scheduling medicine doesn't necessarily reduce abuse.
