My 10 year-old-son hates reading and doesn't read as much as I want him to. I feel like reading expands your mind, but he doesn't do it; he would rather play video games.

The team chatted to Thandazile Ndlovu shares tips on how to get kids to read. Thandazile is a Foundation Phase Teacher with her Honours in Psychology, so she joined the team and shared some valuable tips on how to foster a culture of reading in your household.
Shannon also spoke about a really great initiative called Hooked On Books.
Some advice that came through from the kids...
- give him a sweet for every page he reads
- get books on a tablet and take TV privileges away
- Try Roald Dahl books
- Break the PS4 or Xbox

Creating a culture starts with leading by example. As a country, we have terrible reading habits. According to a study,78% of Grade 4's couldn't read for understanding.

Create a culture of reading at home. Don't treat reading as a punishment; reading should be a. reward.

Instead of saying that because you didn't do something you have to read for an extra hour. Rather say, because you did A, B, and C, you get to read!

Parents shouldn't start creating a culture of reading once there is a problem. Rather start early by reading to them and set aside time at night to read to them.

Be animated when you read the story; make them enjoy it and make them understand that a book takes you on a journey.

If your child is very artsy and can draw beautiful pictures, have them draw pictures and you help them by writing the words to go with the picture - in that way your child is an illustrator and you are an author.

Kids don't often take up reading because we don't make it a fun thing; often it's a forced thing that they _have_ to do at school or at home.

It's important for kids to read things that they enjoy!

Last year, we had kid authors that were part of KidVice when we did a “Let’s read: A Mandela Day Special” with Nickelodeon.
Here are some books by these authors that we suggest the 10-year-old can start with:
