[WATCH] Thuso Mbedu chats to Anele about The Underground Railroad

Anele and the Club, host Anele Mdoda couldn't wait to have a chat with the South African actress, Thuso Mbedu who plays the lead role of Cora Randall in The Underground Railroad.
The Oscar-winning Moonlight director, Barry Jenkins, directs the beautifully shot, television series about a young woman (Mbedu) who makes an amazing discovery during her attempt to break free from slavery in the deep south.

Anele got the chance to interview Mbedu about her role in the series, and how the role managed to heal parts of her through coming to terms with her mothers passing from a young age.

In this heartfelt interview, Thuso opened up to Anele about praying for healing from the series and that people understand the masterpiece, from production design to costume, the lighting, and the story.

A positive and tangible change when it comes to the conversations and trajectory of the black body moving forward

Thuso Mbedu

South African story vs American story to slavery

I had a lot of unlearning to do in order to know the actual truth. What we know as South Africans is limited to what the media has put out there, you know. You know in school, they glaze through certain topics. It's like okay, we've covered it but they don't actually let you understand what it means and what its implications in reality.

Thuso was sent tons of material to read through as well as audio clips, by Jenkins to get a better understanding of her character, Cora Randall. She got to draw a few parallels between herself and her character, which helped her connect with Cora. Her struggles with rejection and abandonment, and the suffering of great loss are just a few of the parallels.

The Underground Railroad premieres internationally on Friday 14 May on Amazon Prime Video.
