Prof Jeffrey Mphahlele clears the confusion on the COVID-19 vaccine rollout

Zweli, Mantsoe, and Shannon chatted to Prof Jeffrey Mphahlele, Vice President for SA Medical Research Council and Ministerial Advisory Committee on vaccines clears the confusion on the rollout of the COVID-19 ASTRA ZENECA vaccine in SA.

Two things came out of the trial. The first is that if you administer the vaccine to participants it was shown that the participants before the new variant emerged were protected - the protection was very high (around 75%). But when given the second dose the efficacy became 22% as a result of the COVID-19 variant - so there was no protection.

Fortunately, there is another chemical trial that was just completed and that trial was using a different brand - the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. With that trial, the efficacy was 57% for SA and 66% overall because it was trialled in multiple countries.

It's not all doom with regards to the AstraZeneca vaccine because we have an alternative (Johnson & Johnson vaccine. If we are to administer the AstraZeneca vaccine then we have to create options before we administer it because we know that it is not effective against the variant; this is a secret discussion taking place right now.

Prof Jeffrey Mphahlele, Vice President for SA Medical Research Council

There's been a lot of discussions and fake news on social media with regards to the vaccines after many people noticed an expiry date on the vials.

When you manufacture a product you have to mention an expiry date - even for vaccines. It is up to the company to determine, based on the quality of the manufacturing, what the expiry date of the product is. The company can give a shorter expiry date because they know the vaccine will be utilized within 3 months, but they are able to extend the expiry date. However, if you use the product beyond the expiry date, we know that the efficacy is not guaranteed at all.

So, what is the way forward?

In the manufacturing space, a number of vaccines producers are looking at improving the current AstraZeneca vaccine.

BACKGROUND

South Africa has put a hold on the rollout of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.

Early scientific data released on Sunday revealed that the vaccine offered "minimal protection" against mild disease for people infected with the second variant of the coronavirus discovered at the end of last year.

Clinical trial data from the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine study locally revealed that it had a 22% efficacy against the 501Y.V2 coronavirus variant.

Minister Mkhize said that at the time that government acquired the vaccines, this clinical trial data had not been concluded.

"Those scientists must get together and quickly figure out what approach we're going to use to effectively deploy the AstraZeneca vaccines."

Professor Shabir Madhi said that it was important to protect high-risk groups against severe forms of COVID-19 and death.

"I think it would be somewhat reckless of us to discard all the millions of dollars of vaccine that is available. There is a biological probability that these vaccines might still be useful in terms of protecting against severe disease."

Experts say that across the board, vaccines have shown diminished efficacy against the second variant of the coronavirus.
